Jeff Bridges steals the entire movie as surfer icon emperor penguin Big Z. She draws out Cody's fun loving side as the vivacious Lani. She sounds playful and lovable with a fun vocal performance. Zooey Deschanel's sweet voice is wonderful as the Gentoo penguin lifeguard love interest Lani. His enthusiasm and reverence of Big Z makes Cody endearing instead of just annoying. Shia LaBeouf is an insecure and eager rockhopper penguin named Cody Maverick. Casting director Mary Hidalgo picked fun choices for Surf's Up's voice cast. Surf's Up feels similar to other hysterical mockumentaries like This Is Spinal Tap or Best in Show. It felt like taking the plot of North Shore or Blue Crush and turning everyone into penguins. They parody surfing documentaries like The Endless Summer and Riding Giants. The overall theme of friendship and values holding true against bullies and public approval is a nice touch. I liked the cute romance, inspirational overcoming doubt, and especially using your calmness to your surfing advantage. Using real surfer lingo distinguishes Surf's Up. It sounds like these penguins are really being interviewed about surfing. Writers Ash Brannon, Chris Buck, Don Rhymer, Christopher Jenkins, Christian Darren, Lisa Addario, and Joe Syracuse bring a near improvisational sound to their dialogue. Brannon and Buck's direction is totally character driven and filming Surf's Up like a mockumentary spoofing surfers' competitive and stoner nature, while still revering the majesty of the tidal wave. It looks pretty with very cute penguin characters. However, Sony's animators did a great job of recreating surfing techniques and lush waters across a vast ocean. Surf's Up is not the greatest animated movie ever made, nor does it compare to Ratatouille from the same year. It feels refreshing to see a movie capture the surfer ethos of having fun catching massive swells with your friends and being yourself.
